Kenya - Active Africa
Runners

From glacial mountains with snow-capped peaks and dramatic river valleys, to spectacular wide-open grasslands and coral reefs along the Indian Ocean, Kenya is a world-class destination for adventure junkies and thrill seekers.

On the Ground

Trekking has long been popular with active visitors as the mountains and scenery make for perfect walking country. Mount Kenya, the second highest peak in Africa, provides a challenging climb which is nonetheless accessible for many fitness levels. Other popular treks include Mount Elgon, the Cherengani Hills and Mount Longonot. Despite the mild climate at low altitude, trekkers will enjoy the bracing summits and rocky terrain. Whilst those who prefer to travel on four legs will find horse riding is popular in Lewa and Meru. Camel trekking is an option which comes with the advantage of offering a glimpse into the life of Kenya's nomadic tribes. Whilst the quiet solitude of the camel train offers a good mode of transport for birdwatchers too.

For truly dynamic activities, white water rafting, rock climbing, motorised canoeing, deep-sea fishing, scuba diving, kite surfing and walking safaris are also part of the Kenyan activities compliment.

In the Air

Flightseeing tours are the best way to get a true sense of the Kenyan landscape – and with so many aeronautic options, visitors may decide to take to the skies more than once. Light aircraft provides a thrilling way to see the bush, but some will prefer the silent solitude of a hot air balloon tour. Sailing soundlessly over the plains this majestic form of transport allows superb animal sightings, especially during the great migration in summer. One-hour tours are popular both with honeymooners and those celebrating a special occasion. But many feel that taking to the skies in a balloon is reason enough to enjoy a champagne bush breakfast on landing.

In the Water

The waters off the Kenyan coast are warm and literally teeming with fish. Along the entire 300 miles of Kenyan coastline you will find protected coral reef, have the opportunity to swim with dolphins and encounter 15-metre Whale Sharks. With a number of world class dive sites, reefs and caves, a Kenyan scuba safari gives you the whole wild world - underwater. Combining these underwater wonders with a traditional wildlife safari is an opportunity not to be missed.
